How LifeSignal handles your information.

1. Introduction
LifeSignal is a QR-code and WhatsApp-based emergency information service operated by LifeSignal Systems (Pty) Ltd, a company registered in South Africa (“LifeSignal”, “we”, “us”, or “our”).
This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have regarding your information. By using LifeSignal — including registering for our waitlist, creating a profile, or accessing any part of our service — you acknowledge this policy.
We are committed to handling your information responsibly and transparently.
2. Information We Collect
We may collect the following types of information:
- Waitlist information. If you join the LifeSignal waitlist, we collect your email address and the date and time of registration. This information is used only to send you launch updates and early access notifications.
- Profile information. When you register for LifeSignal and create a profile, we collect your name, email address, and any other details required to set up and manage your profile.
- Emergency profile information.You may voluntarily provide personal health and contact information as part of your LifeSignal emergency profile. This may include medical conditions, allergies, medications, blood type, your doctor's details, and other information you choose to include.
- Emergency contact information. You may provide the names and contact details of people you want notified in an emergency. You are responsible for ensuring you have appropriate permission to provide their details.
- QR code access events. When your LifeSignal QR code is scanned, we may log the event, including the time of the scan and limited technical information about the request, for security and auditing purposes.
3. Sensitive Information
LifeSignal may store health-related information that users choose to provide, including medical conditions, allergies, medications, blood type, doctor information, and other emergency profile details.
This information is collected solely for the purpose of providing LifeSignal services and is only displayed according to the sharing preferences selected by the user. It is never shared with third parties for commercial purposes.
LifeSignal treats this information as sensitive personal information and takes appropriate technical and organisational steps to protect it.
4. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and operate the LifeSignal service.
- Display the emergency information you have chosen to share when your QR code is accessed through a valid LifeSignal flow.
- Notify the emergency contacts you have designated via WhatsApp or other communication methods you have enabled.
- Communicate with you about your profile, service updates, and product announcements. You may opt out of non-essential communications at any time.
- Improve, maintain, and develop the LifeSignal service.
- Comply with legal obligations.
5. Information Sharing
You are in control of what information is shared when your QR code is scanned. LifeSignal displays only the information you have specifically chosen to include in your emergency profile.
Your emergency profile information is only displayed when a valid QR code access event occurs through the LifeSignal system. It is not publicly indexed or accessible via direct URL.
We do not sell your personal information to any third party. We do not share your personal information with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
We may share information with trusted service providers who assist us in operating the LifeSignal platform (such as cloud infrastructure and communication services), but only to the extent necessary and subject to appropriate data processing agreements.
6. Data Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information from unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.
Access to your emergency profile through a QR code scan is managed and controlled by LifeSignal's systems. Your profile is not accessible via a direct, open URL. Scan activity may be logged for security and auditing purposes.
No system is completely secure. While we work hard to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. We encourage you to use a strong, unique password for your LifeSignal profile.
7. South African Privacy Compliance
LifeSignal Systems (Pty) Ltd is committed to complying with applicable South African privacy legislation, including the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).
As required by POPIA, we process personal information lawfully, in a reasonable manner, and with your knowledge. We collect only the information necessary to provide the Service as described in this policy, and we take steps to ensure it is kept accurate and secure.
You remain in control of what information is stored in your LifeSignal profile and what is displayed when your QR code is scanned. You may update or remove your information at any time through your profile settings.
If you believe any information we hold about you is inaccurate, you may request a correction by contacting us at hello@lifesignal.co.za.
If you believe your rights under POPIA have been infringed, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa.
